The Myth

of the

Teacup Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is one of twenty one breeds that

is included in the American Kennel Club’s Toy Group.  The Chihuahua is a small dog according to the American Kennel Club’s Breed Standard and the only identifiable difference is there coat.  The Chihuahua is either a long coat or a smooth coat and does not vary in any other way shape or form.  The American Kennel Club does not distinguish any difference in size.  When showing your Chihuahua the only disqualification for size is if they are over 6 lbs.  

Now it is not unusual to find a puppy that is smaller in comparison to the rest of the litter, just as with your own children some will be taller or shorter than the rest.  It is unfortunate but so many people over the years have used the terms teacup, tiny teacup, micro, micro mini, tiny toy, toy , pocket size, miniature, pocket pup and many more, that it now seems to be a legitimate term, but it is not.  These terms have been used to make you think that you are getting something rare or of great value but in all essence, a Chihuahua is a Chihuahua and anyone using these term are misleading you.  Please do not be taken in by a Chihuahua breeder that claims that they have this very special and unique form of the Chihuahua.  If you found this incredible breeder that has this Chihuahua that does not exist maybe they can find you a unicorn too.  We do not use this term and do not condone it.  Please do not encourage this and please use caution and do not be misled while searching for your Chihuahua.
