Grooming Your Long Coat Chi
Long coat Chihuahuas do not require much in the way of special tools. Although your dog may look like it does not need to be brushed, Chihuahuas do shed a little. Although the long coat Chihuahua may have more coat than the smooth coat, it is still fairly easy to groom. There is not much in the way of grooming besides routine brushing and a little bit of neatening up. Trim the hair between your Chi’s foot pads because it is supposed to have dainty feeet. Keep the nails short enough not to impede movement. Floors can be slippery, so shorter nails also allow the foot pads a better grip as the dog moves around.
Any trimming of the rest of the coat is minimal. The whiskers can either be trimmed or not, either is correct, and you may trim a little around the anus, although nothing extreme. The look is supposed to be neat but natural. You should never have to trim the anus area if your Chi is on the proper diet and parasite free. Chi’s need to be brushed behind the ears, elbows and tail to avoid tangling. Use a soft slicker brush to keep the coat untangled. I find that the body does not get tangled, the ears are the most important. The Chi’s do go through a coat change a couple times a year but it is very gradual and usually not noticeable. I would brush your Chi at least 2 to 3 times a week, it probably is not needed but it is good quality time. I would start with the brush and then with the comb. If the comb snags a tangle, try to separate it with your fingers and brush a little more. You are striving for a natural appearance, so haircuts are not necessary for long coats.
I usually give them a bath or a shower once every week to 2 weeks as needed and then brush them as I am drying them. I probably bath them more then I need but it is so easy to do, they enjoy it and they do not have any skin conditions from it. They really love to play afterwards. My two favorite types of shampoo are tea tree and lavender, both are very calming. Tea tree is very calming to the skin and lavender is more mood calming. I would also use a light weight condition to keep the coat soft and silky. During the time they go through there coat change I put Omega III in there food. You can get these in gel cap form. I pierce the gel cap and just squeeze it over there food.
