Feeding, Worming, Vaccination and Cleaning Routine

 

Feeding.  All puppies are feed and will go home with By Nature Naturals Puppy Formula Dry Food.  Our puppies are free fed so they have both this kibbles available to them at all times.  Most of the puppies prefer the dry food soaked in warm water first.  By Nature Naturals is a very high quality kibble for the puppies.  We feed out adults the By Nature Organic - Chicken Formula Dry Food/  All my adults love it and do not have any issues with them being overweight.  The puppies are also fed wet food about a tablespoon full twice per day once in the morning and once in the evening.  If the puppy is going home locally a can will be sent with you.  The wet food we feed is By Nature 95% Chicken and By Nature 95% Turkey and Bacon.  We also like to treat everyone with By Nature Goldleaf Select.  If feeding to the puppies please make sure the pieces of whole chicken are cut up nice and small.  Our adults LOVE the By Nature Goldleaf Select Dinners.  We also will cook for our puppies based on their needs.  I will boil one chicken breast (no skin) until cooked.  I then microwave ½ cup instant white rice with ½ cup low fat and low sodium chicken broth with one egg whipped and dropped into the broth.  Cut chicken into tiny pieces not much bigger than the rice and mix with the rice, pour a little more chicken broth over to moisten.  They will love this.  We feed this to the picky eaters, very small puppies or puppies that have just received their vaccines.  If your puppy ever does not want to eat, this is what I would suggest but do not make this a regular thing and spoil them with it.  They will need more than this to have a balanced diet.

Worming.  We will also send home two syringes.  In these syringes you will find Panacur and an Albon/Flagyl mixture.  This is not because the puppies are sick but rather as prevention.  Our puppies and moms are wormed regularly.  A copy of their wormings and vaccinations will be provided to you.  A puppy will not leave us if they do not have a solid stool. We do everything possible to make sure that you get a puppy that is parasite free.  The Panacur is the white liquid.  We give them this on the first of each month for three days.  I will send you enough for 5 days.  Even though we do this once a month we want to make sure that nothing was missed, brought on by stress and to insure that nothing is brought into your home.  We do the same thing with the yellow Albon mixture.  (Protozoa are one celled animals that are not visible to the naked eye, but are easily seen under the microscope.  They are usually carried in water and feces.  A fresh stool specimen is required to identify the adult parasite or its cysts.  Coccidiosis and Giardia is an opportunistic disease – it generally affects stressed animals.  Some species cause diseases that result in mild symptoms that might go unnoticed (i.e., mild diarrhea) and eventually disappear but when you add stress to the mix it will make its presents known.  This is why when a pup is going to a new home or especially if they are flying that I send them with Panacur and an Albon/Flagyl mixture.)  Remember the mom’s clean and eat the poop off the babies butts (yuk, I know), then they lick and clean the pups all over.  This can be transmitted through the mother’s milk, in the food and the water.  Once you have your puppy you will see how easy it happens.  No matter how quickly you pick up after them, especially in numbers, someone will step in the poop then step in the food and water.  This is all it takes.

 

Vaccines.   Distemper/Parvo/Parainfluenza Vaccinations are typically given when the puppy is 7 weeks old and then not again until they are 10 weeks old.  If a puppy is very small, does not have a perfect stool or is a picky eater we might wait until they are 8 weeks old and then it would be case by case to see if we would revaccinate at 11 weeks or if we would wait until 12 weeks old.  We will never give vaccines any closer than 3 weeks from one another, this is the absolute minimum in between vaccinations and if very small we usually like to do 4 weeks in between.  When your puppy goes home he/she will have received 2 of the 4 Parvo/Distemper/Parainfluenza vaccines (Progard 5)  Please follow the same 3 to 4 week rule when getting the 3rd and 4th vaccination.  A Bronchicine CAe Vaccination is given at 8 weeks for Bordetella (Kennel Cough), this is the injectable form not the nasal. When scheduling your puppy or adult dog to get vaccinated never get them vaccines if they are not at their best or have a less than perfect stool.  Remember when vaccinating they are injecting a live virus into them which could compromise their immune system.  Would you give your child a vaccination if they did not feel well?  Of course not.  The same thing applies to your puppy and dog.  Due to the small size of the Chihuahua we recommend that you wait until they are 6 months old before they get there rabies vaccines.  Please also pre-medicate with Benadryl and Cortisone.  This is given to minimize the chance of an allergic reaction to the vaccine and to minimize soreness and inflamation at the site of the injection.

 

Cleaning.  Our puppy area is cleaned and picked up after all day but we mop at minimum with a fresh bucket of solution four times a day with Lysol which kills 99% of all bacteria, bleach and then misted down and left for ten minutes before drying with a hospital grade antimicrobial disinfectant, fungicide, virucide that also kills MRSA.  All drinking water is chlorinated bottled water and is changed at minimum once per day unless we notice someone playing in it then it is changed right then and there.  All the puppies bedding, play mats and toys are changed each and every day.
