Chihuahua Safety

A Chihuahua may look like a child’s toy, but this tiny, feisty but delicate breed is one of the least suitable for children.  Unstable toddlers could fall on a tiny Chihuahua and young children might scoop one up and drop it, causing serous injury or worse especially in the case of puppies or smaller Chihuahuas.

The loud and unpredictable nature of children can intimidate a Chihuahua, or even spark an aggressive reaction.  Chihuahuas do not want to be tossed about, chased or handled roughly.  A Chihuahua that has a bad experience with a child may have a hard time trusting any children.  Chihuahuas are not aggressive or nippy dogs,  they only become this way from improper handling and teasing, it is out of fear or self-defense.

On the other hand, older, gentle children make excellent companions for Chihuahuas that love to play, cuddle and get lots of attention.  It is all about size.

Remember young children may be tempted to shout at a puppy if they think he’s doing something wrong.  Be sure they understand that puppies and dogs can be easily upset and startled by loud noises.  No teasing.  Keep a toy just out of reach will reinforce bad habits such as jumping up and excessive barking.  Wagging tails and play biting can be too rough for some young children.  Supervise interaction and separate them if the play is too rough.  Please remember that a Chihuahua should always be the responsibility of an adult, not a child.  Small children should always be supervised.

Chihuahua owners need to get in the habit of watching where they step, looking behind them before they back up and looking before they sit down.

Keep a collar or harness and a leash on your Chihuahua whenever you’re in an unenclosed outdoor area.  Chihuahuas can quickly dart away after another dog, outrun their humans and refuse to come when called when it counts the most.  This puts Chihuahuas at risk for getting hit by cars or attacked by a larger dog.

Chihuahuas don’t realize how small they really are, Chihuahua owners must be prepared to protect their assertive little dogs from harm.  Large dogs can accidentally injure a Chihuahua even when playing, and some dogs with a high prey drive could mistake a Chihuahua for a prey animals (gopher, squirrel, rabbit, etc.).  Some large dogs find Chihuahuas confusing and intimidating, others won’t take kindly to the Chihuahua’s sometimes aggressive behavior.
